Gift Your Stuff is a website that makes it easier for people to donate used goods to Indian charities. I made it based on my own experience that even in a city like Mumbai with thousands of charities it’s not always easy to donate used goods to a good cause. I know there are charities out there which may be in need of these goods but I don’t know which ones. Gift Your Stuff tries to help by matching donations of used goods with the needs of charities.   

 

What is Gift Your Stuff?

What kind of goods can be donated? 

We welcome any kind of goods: clothes, toys, household items, musical instruments, arts materials, etc.


The only criteria is that the goods must be in good shape and clean! Clothes must be washed and not have any stains. Electrical appliances must be in good working order. Charities don’t have time and money for repair work. We must donate second hand goods not just to get rid of junk but to make a difference.

  
 

How does it work?

For charities

Charities simply send us an email to info@giftyourstuff.org with a description of the goods they wish to have. This can be anything from baby items to musical instruments, household items and PC’s to used office desks. This information will be posted on www.giftyourstuff.org. We recommend you to be as specific as possible. For instance if you need books, please specify what kind of books. For example, children's books for the ages 3 to 6 or specify the language. The more information that you provide, the better.


In addition to a description of the goods, we also ask for contact and location information (name, telephone number, email address). We also appreciate if the charity specifies the preferred way of delivery.

  
 

For donors
Donors can browse through the postings from the charity organizations and send an email with a description of the goods to be donated to charity. If you wish you can also send a picture of the goods. After finding a match, simply bring the goods to the charity of your choice. This is also a good opportunity to become more involved in the work of charity organizations in your own community!

  
 

How can the goods be delivered to the charity?

Gift your stuff tries to coordinate the delivery of the goods to the charity. We try to make the delivery process as easy as possible for both the charities and the donors.


These are some tips for donating goods to charity (source: www.smartgivers.com):

1.Some charities are willing to pick items up; others require donors to drop them off. Organizations that pick up items set their own schedules and may not be immediately available to come to your house.

2.Charities need goods, not trash. Donate items that are in good and useable condition. Otherwise, charities will have to spend precious resources in trash removal of unusable donated items, money that would otherwise be spent on programs and services. 


Are there any costs involved?

No. The service provided by this website is absolutely free. The work is done on a voluntary basis. Charities do not have to pay for posting information on this website. Donated goods are always FREE of charge.
